ABOUT THIS ADVENTURE

Itinerary

Day 1 Travel from Auckland via Rotorua to Track start (10.5 kms/4 hours hiking)

Drive via Rotorua to Lake Waikaremoana. We stop briefly for a picnic lunch and a backpack sort out before being dropped at the track start. Hike along the track until we hit the edge of an estuary and then shortly after, catch our first glimpse of the lake. The track follows the lake edge for most of the afternoon before reaching the comfortable Waiharuru Hut, where we are staying for the first night on the track. We arrive late afternoon/early evening. Stay in the hut. Get the hut fire roaring and fall asleep to the sounds of wilderness.

Includes lunch and dinner.

Day 2 Waiharuru Hut to Waipoua Hut (18.3km/6-8 hrs hiking)

After breakfast we embark on the longest day of walking. Enjoy the bush, birds and beaches of the western arm of Lake Waikaremoana. The Urewera forest is comprised of a huge range of tree and plant species, which provide homes for many native birds. You are likely to witness the amazing fantail, tomtit and kereru, and hear the melodious calls of the bellbird and tui.

For the last part of the day, walk through kanuka forest, which forms a tunnel-like trail on the lake shore. Waiopaoa Hut, nestled amongst the luxuriant rainforest that stretches to the lake edge, is our home for the night.

Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 3 Waipoua Hut to Panekire Hut (7.6km/4-5 hrs hiking)

Hoist your pack this morning and follow the track as it climbs up through bright green tawa and beech forest to the Panekiri Range – over 500m above the lake. The trail climbs gently at first and later more steeply! As we trundle along the ridge to Panekiri Hut you get great views beyond Lake Waikaremoana to the contiguous wilderness stretching for hundreds of kilometres to the north, south and west. A picnic lunch en-route will be enjoyed. Once arriving at the hut devour your well-earned dinner and then take a rest for the night.

Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4 Panekire Hut to Track end (9km /4-5 hrs hiking). Return to Rotorua

Our final hiking day has arrived. Hit the track which undulates along the ridge through gnarled beech forest and passes many brilliant viewpoints before the final descent to the road end. A 3 hour drive back to Rotorua will take us to our home for the night where can sit back, relax and enjoy a nice hot shower and dinner (delivered) together.

Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5 Relaxing soak before returning back to Auckland

After a good nights sleep we’ll head over to the Polynesian Spa for a soak in the Deluxe Lake Spa where you can embrace nature’s sanctuary and slip into five mineral hot pools overlooking Lake Rotorua. Try the cold plunge pool, lounge on geothermal recliners and enjoy deluxe changing rooms.  Our guide will have us back to Auckland by 5-6pm.

Includes breakfast and lunch.

Bathroom facilities – on the hut nights there will be long drop toilets. There will be rivers or lakes nearby for washing, and sometimes there are even natural hot pools!

Eating….(food)

As well as being the time to rest, refuel and recharge, meal times are also a great time to get to know your fellow travellers better, sit back and enjoy the amazing surroundings and enjoy some great food! Everybody has a turn with the preparation and cooking of meals: barbecues, salads, pancakes, curries, pasta, stir-fries, Vegetarian meals are no problem.

On the wild nights; the group will usually eat pasta and rice meals (special ‘secret’ recipes used).
