All the caves and jumps are optional… you choose the level of adventure that’s right for you! A no-rush, explore at your own pace adventure while gaining access to hidden pools and water sculptured gorges. This otherwise inaccessible environment, last used by the pioneers as they worked the canyon 100 years ago, harvesting the mighty Kauri logs and flushing them from the hills via dam releases – Some of the old logs remain embedded in the canyon.
Following the trip we visit the Piha’s famous black sand surf beach. One of the advantages of the Piha canyon is its good access, with only a 35 min walk in and 5 min downhill walk out from the end of the canyon, means we can kick back at the Piha Store for hot pizza and bubbles after our adventure… and if we have the energy we can go explore the Kitekite Falls.
Do you have to do all the abseils, jumps, slides, caves etc.?
Most abseils and all jumps are optional. Often there are ways to get around obstacles or the guides will give you easier options if you require it. You don’t have to go through any caves.
Our guides will take photos of you during your trip, they have got a lot of experience at getting the good shots. we aim to send you at least 6 photos, but often more like 10 photos – it just depends on the conditions in the canyon. You are welcome to bring your own waterproof camera (at your own risk). If you do bring your camera your guide will explain to you the safe times to use it (its important the photography doesn’t interfere with safety on the trip).
And best of all you get all the photos on the day for free.. YUS!
How fit do I have to be for the Piha half day?
You should feel confident that you can walk up hills in wetsuits and navigate through slippery streams and over rocks.
Is canyoning safe?
In general jumps and slides are considered as the main contributing factors to injuries within the canyoning industry. The types of canyon we operate in are small catchment and have easy exits from the canyon therefore making them very safe from this risk.
How cold is it?
Most of the time the full length wetsuits will keep you perfectly comfortable. But for a couple of months over mid winter (June and July) the canyoning is cold and only for the brave hearted! Most of the time canyoning is the perfect activity for colder wetter days as we are fully suited in wetsuits and will be jumping into water anyway!
